Sustainable packaging

Andreas Schmid

Single-use plastic is a big issue for our planet. However, sometimes it is necessary. In the world of product packaging, plastic does a great job of protecting products. So, how do we remove single-use plastic without negatively impacting user experience?

We knew we needed to prioritise this initiative. Plastic pollution is a major environmental issue and many of us are aware of the negative impact on marine life.

In 2021, we kicked off our project to eliminate any plastics previously used to protect the luminaire and hold any product accessories. We’d also seen the challenges that lighting installers were experiencing with our packaging. We were seeing one pile of plastic that couldn’t be recycled and another pile of cardboard that could be recycled. We wanted to reduce site waste and ensure that our packaging is fully recyclable.

This project needed to ensure that our customers still experienced reliable supply whilst we ran through the unique packaging requirements of each product in the range and rolled out the new plastic-free packaging for ThornECO products.

We are overjoyed to announce that by the middle of 2023, the packaging for all of our ThornECO products in the range will be fully plastic free and the lessons learned from this sustainable initiative can further help improve sustainable packaging initiatives in the future.
