Fluorescent lighting – it’s had its day

Did you know that from August 2023, T5 and T8 fluorescent light bulbs and lamps will be phased out in the UK? This is the result of a “Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substances” (or RoHS for short) directive.

In this case, the hazardous substance is mercury. While it’s already banned in electric or electronic equipment, this new directive extends the ban to the lighting industry.

As well as creating a cleaner and safer environment, the ban on fluorescent lamps will lead to an increase in the availability of energy-efficient solutions. Win-win!

As a result - people will also be in a better position to drastically reduce their energy consumption and save costs.

This change will affect schools and colleges across the country – so it’s time to sit up and pay attention.

Help is at hand

In a bid to shield schools and colleges from high energy bills and boost budgets, £500 million of funding has been allocated to schools in England. This can be spent on energy efficiency upgrades – including lighting!

A typical primary school with 200 pupils will get approximately £28,000 and secondary schools with around 900 pupils will receive approximately £170,000. Similar schemes are available elsewhere in the UK.

Changing lamps and lives

While reducing cost and saving energy is attractive, the impact of lighting can go much further. A well-designed lighting scheme can positively influence performance and wellbeing.
